Easy South African trifle recipe with sponge cake, jelly, custard, cream, and fresh fruit. A colourful, festive layered dessert perfect for gatherings.
Dissolve the jelly crystals in boiling water and allow them to cool slightly.
Place the sponge cake cubes in the bottom of a trifle dish and spread with jam if using.
Pour the cooled jelly over the cake layer and refrigerate until set.
Spoon the custard over the set jelly layer and smooth the top.
Add the whipped cream over the custard, then top with fresh fruit and garnish.
Chill for at least 2 hours before serving so the layers set nicely.
